Course Description:


This course presents all Theatre Department Freshmen and transfer students with practical information about the department and the university, introductory elements of professional practice, as well as arts activities on campus and in the city of Boston. Guests will visit the class to discuss their experiences in theatre and related areas. Homework will include reviews, reflection papers, resumes and cover letters.


Departmental information such as production practicum, student showcases, auditioning, advising, capstone projects, internships and study abroad opportunities. Theatre professors and staff come to some classes to introduce themselves and discuss their areas of expertise.


Introductory elements of professional practice, such a resumes, cover letters, interviews and professional protocol are taught. Students will complete the class with a resume appropriate to their interests.


Students are made aware of arts activities on campus and in the city of Boston for which writing assignments are required. Students must attend a performance of at least one play at a professional venue in Boston and write an analysis of that performance.


Class Structure:


This course will explore the educational and professional opportunities available to you at Suffolk University. The class will employ a variety of formats, from direct instruction, seminar-style discussions, and group collaborations. There will also be several guest speakers. This is a required class for theatre majors and transfer students. It meets once per week, so attendance is essential and mandatory; attendance is taken and will figure as part of the final grade.
