The following assignment is based upon the short piece of music you have selected.

Abstract Visual Response:

The abstract visual response is a non-theatrical, visual, artistic expression of your reaction to or understanding of a text (or, in this case, a piece of music). It should not be too “intellectual”, but should tap into those abstract emotional connections to the script that can best be expressed with color, line, rhythm, shape, texture, and composition.

The response can be a painting or a collage. It is not an illustration, but an artistic reaction. Just as we created abstract paintings when listening to music in class, the key is to tap into what you think and feel about the text or music and then translate those feelings into a visual medium that can be shared.

The abstract visual response may be a new concept for you, but it can be a wonderful way to get at the heart of your ideas and feelings about a script or a piece of music.

Pretty much anything goes, BUT there are two fundamental rules: Do not copy another work of art and do not use gold spray painted macaroni. (Well, OK, if you have a REALLY good reason for using the macaroni . . .).

Album Cover:

The abstract response, in this case, will take the form of the album cover for your song. It is not an illustration, but an artistic reaction. The key is to tap into what you think and feel about the text or music and then translate those feelings into a visual medium that can be shared. Think of the arresting, abstract, non-photographic artwork of some classic albums as inspiration.

The album cover should be 11" x 11" (Think LP cover) and can be made from your bristol board. You could also use something heavier like illustration board or mat board.

Any lyrics to the music for this project should not be offensive or demeaning to any group of people.
